I'm not sure that truncation will happen - it might be browser dependent. (I

Yes, there is no checking here, and your concern is valid. I rolled this out a 
first-cut prototype. I suppose it would be possible to break the table into two 
pieces (Table1 & Table2) replicating the index columns in each...
