InterMapper can monitor *NIX nodes to varying degrees. It all depends on what
probes you want to use and how much information you want to collect. You can
use a simple ping probe, to SSH, HTTP/HTTPS probes to monitor services, or you
can enable SNMP on the *NIX servers and use some of the supplied Simple SNMP
probes. You can add a device to a map multiple times, assigning each device a
different probe, then you group the multiple devices into a single group item.
You can build your own probes using the new Probe Builder feature found in
InterMapper.

What InterMapper can't do is to scrape logs for specific errors. At Georgian
College we are using another tool called Splunk as a syslog server. We
configure our infrastructure devices including some Linux servers to mirror log
events to our Splunk remote syslog server. Splunk collects all the remote
logging and Splunk provides a fairly robust search syntax. You can build
dashboards based on saved searches and run scheduled nightly reports. You can
also create alerts. There are other syslog servers available such as
Kiwi/Sawmill from Solarwinds,

I hope this helps.
