Is  there a functional other reason that IM 5.6 is not backwards 
compatible to Java 1.5  ( I am using two mac G5's )?

You're correct. InterMapper RemoteAccess 5.6 does require Java 1.6. 

I asked a Java developer about it, and he indicated that Java 6 is 
supported on 64-bit Intel Macs only for Java 10.5.8 .
