Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. Some of the best radio comes from the public networks
of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. While there
are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones
sponsored via public radio have been vetted though the worthy objectives of the
medium.

I personally curate this now resuming series of small samplings that are listed
in more or less 90 minute helpings. Admittedly that makes these recommendations
somewhat subjective. But, as you will see, my interests are many and my
tolerance for incompatible topics and views are pretty wide-ranging. I hope
you will find these suggestions helpful in enhancing your enjoyment of radio.

“The Irish Rebellion of 1798”
IN OUR TIME - BBC Radio 4
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the momentum behind rebellion in Ireland in
1798, the people behind the rebellion and the impact over the next few years
and after. Amid wider unrest, the United Irishmen set the rebellion on its way,
inspired by the French and American revolutionaries and their pursuit of
liberty. When it broke out in May the United Irishmen had an estimated two
hundred thousand members, Catholic and Protestant, and the prospect of a French
invasion fleet to back them. Crucially for the prospects of success, some of
those members were British spies who exposed the plans and the military were
largely ready - though not in Wexford where the scale of rebellion was much
greater. The fighting was initially fierce and brutal and marked with
sectarianism but had largely been suppressed by the time the French arrived in
August to declare a short-lived republic. The consequences of the rebellion
were to be far reaching, not least in the passing of Acts of Union in 1800.

"The Wild West of Whisky: From Cask Investments to Dram Scams”
THE FOOD PROGRAMME - BBC Radio 4
Whisky has long been associated with money and wealth, but in recent years
prices of rare casks and limited bottlings have soared. A cask of Islay whisky
sold for a record-breaking £16 million last year, and the number of cask
investment companies is growing, with many of them promising investors big
profits and the chance to own their very own cask of Scotch whisky.
Behind the headlines and dollar signs, some industry experts are concerned at
the practices of certain companies, worried that their promised returns are
unrealistic and questioning their suitability to trade in some cases. (29”)
