Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own
enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

"Why do so many of us feel so damn lonely and too ashamed to talk about it?”
BID IDEAS - ABC Radio National
In a world of hyper-connectivity and social media, why do so many of us feel so
damn lonely? Being lonely isn’t the same as being alone, and some people love
their solitude. But loneliness is widespread, growing, affects all ages, and
seriously sucks for your physical and mental health. Why are we so ashamed to
talk about it, and what can help? Four guests join Big Ideas host Natasha
Mitchell for a frank, fearless and moving conversation about a very modern
challenge. (61”)

“Is the Future of Live Music an Illusion”
FUTURE TENSE - ABC Radio National
As Australia’s live music industry has been left decimated by the COVID-19
pandemic and unprecedented damage to venues from bushfires, we’re attending
more online concerts, virtual gigs and streamed festivals than ever before.
Technology is evolving at a rapid pace, pushed along by the demand for content
and even giving rise to the reality that not all live musicians have to be
living. But what does this mean for the future of live music? Can the digital
and physical industries co-exist? And what does the future hold for musicians,
how they’ll be paid and immortalised in digital technology? (29”)
