In much contemporary discourse, ‘international intervention’ in
response to situations of crisis and conflict connotes coercive,
military, intervention. But intervention by outside actors, usually
from powerful countries in the North, in the affairs of poorer
countries in the South has always taken a much broader course. Now,
in the 21st century, the context and nature of intervention is
changing fundamentally and at speed. Intervention may occur for
economic and financial as well as political purposes and appears less
as a series of separate episodes and more as a set of continuous
processes, involving a wider range of actors impacting on each other
in an increasingly interdependent world.

Taking an inter-disciplinary approach, this ESRC-funded conference to
be held on 30-31 July 2014 at the University of Surrey, Guildford,
UK, will seek to establish a framework that accounts for the
motivations and expectations of interveners and the consequences both
intended and unintended of intervention, comparing the perspectives
of people ‘on the receiving end’ of international intervention with
those of the outsiders who intervene.

Proposals are sought, both from academia and from the practitioner
community, for papers and posters looking at international
intervention with regard to, for example:

- economic globalisation
- disruptive technological innovation
- shifting power relations between North and South
- challenges to established models of intervention
- new and emerging tools of intervention
- new theoretical models of intervention

Other angles are also welcome and contributions are sought from a
range of disciplines. The conference aims to break new ground and
generate a fresh perspective on the topic.

Limited funds may be available for post-graduate bursaries.
Abstracts (maximum 300 words) are requested by 31 March 2014.
