Conference Announcement Theme: Global Justice and Health Workforce Distribution Type: International Conference Institution: Emmy Noether Group in Political Philosophy and Bioethics and Centre for Advanced Studies in Bioethics, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster Location: Münster (Germany) Date: 23.–24.6.2014 __________________________________________________ The "global health workforce crisis" is the combined effect of three different problems in the global distribution of health professionals: a critical shortage of health care workers, a radically uneven distribution of personnel, and the increasing migration of health workers from poor countries to affluent ones (often called "medical brain drain"). What are the main ethical questions that arise from this situation, and how can we foster fair and feasible solutions? This conference brings together influential speakers on the ethics and policy of global health workforce distribution, addressing key challenges both at the national and international level. Topics that will be discussed include: - migration vs. distribution - freedom of movement vs. right to (population) health - ethics and the policy of recruitment - the state's right to restrict emigration - sufficiency in health workforce planning - duties of medical migrants - medical tourism and the role of medical education Confirmed speakers: Gillian Brock (University of Auckland) Alena Buyx (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) Simon Caney (Oxford University) Gilles Dussault (Universidade Nova de Lisboa/WHO) Nir Eyal (Harvard University) Dirk Hagemeister (University of the Free State South Africa) Samia Hurst (University of Geneva) Eszter Kollar (Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main/WWU Münster) Darrel Moellendorf (Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main) Jeremy Snyder (Simon Fraser University) Christine Straehle (Ottawa University) Jonathan Wolff (University College London) Venue: Alexander von Humboldt-House, Hüfferstr. 61, 48149 Münster Conference convenors: Eszter Kollar and Alena Buyx (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) Registration: The conference is free of charge and open to all, but registration is necessary.
