Call for Papers Theme: National-Personal Autonomy, Non-territorial Autonomy, Cultural Autonomy Type: International Conference Institution: University of Vienna Location: Vienna (Austria) Date: 8.–10.1.2015 Deadline: 15.11.2015 __________________________________________________ National-personal autonomy is a form of self-rule for ethnic groups based on ethnic belonging and not on territory. There have been various models and transformations of this concept over time and space. National-personal autonomy can be a system to organise multi-ethnic states and/or a model to protect ethnic minorities in classical nation states. This idea has developed in theory and in practise under very different political and ideological conditions. At the same time, national-personal autonomy models have been widely criticised for their emphasis on ethnic affiliation and the potential ethnification of the society. The research project “Theory, Practice and Transfer of National-Personal Autonomy”, based at the University of Vienna and the Central European University in Budapest, calls for papers for an interdisciplinary workshop to be held in Vienna on 8-10 January 2015. We aim at creating a network of scholars working in this field, and at getting familiar with various approaches including history, political science, law and nationalism studies. Presenters should give a maximum 15 minutes overview over their current research, leaving us enough time to discuss all projects. In addition, we will have talks by senior scholars. If you are interested, please email an English or German abstract of your research project (max. 500 words) and a short CV by 15 November 2014. Graduate students and young PhDs are also very welcome to apply. For practical reasons, there is a limit on the number of participants. Those applying will be informed of the outcome within about a week of the deadline. The inviting project will provide free accommodation for all participants. There is a small budget for travel subsidies, but as a rule participants will have to cover travel expenses themselves. Possible topics for papers: - Approaches in the Habsburg Empire (Moravia, Bukovina, Galicia, Bosnia, Transylvania …) - Theoretical writings and critique (historical and contemporary perspective) - Baltic States during the interwar period and today - Left leaning Jewish parties (Bund, Fareynikte, …) - Revolutionary Russia (Ukrainian People’s Republic, Far Eastern Republic, Mensheviki, USSR, …) - Ottoman Millet system - Contemporary country case studies: Hungary, Russia, Sami; Bosnia, Cyprus … - Negative consequences (forced ethnic ascription, ethnification, …) Paper proposals without any connections to Eastern Europe or Europe at all are also warmly welcome.
