Call for Papers Theme: Culture, Communication and Transnational Societies Type: International Interdisciplinary Conference Institution: Department of Communication Arts and Indian Studies Centre, Chulalongkorn University Department of Drama, University of Exeter Location: Bangkok (Thailand) Date: 12.–13.2.2016 Deadline: 14.10.2015 __________________________________________________ The concepts of ‘Nation’ and ‘Nationalism’ are seen as being of potentially lesser relevance in our transnational, ‘Post-nation’ world. British philosopher and neuroscientist Nayef Al-Rodhan envisions human civilization as an ocean into which the different geo-cultural domains and subcultures flow like rivers. What part do culture, the arts, performance and communication media play in reflecting or shaping this transnational flow? What effect does the exchange of culture have on transnational societies, leading to new hybrid forms of arts and performance, as well as complex questions of identity? What is the resistance to this flow of rivers into the ocean, with some groups and societies becoming ever smaller and more fixed in their definition of a micro-identity? And how do new alliances, such as the ASEAN union, deal with these flows and resistances in being forced to confront and create a new vision of society and cultural identity? ‘Culture, Communication and Transnational Societies’ is an international and interdisciplinary conference, jointly organised by the Department of Communication Arts and the Indian Studies Centre at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and the Department of Drama at the University of Exeter, UK. The conference will consist of keynote talks, paper panels, presentations and performances interrogating the above questions. We are inviting proposals for papers, presentations and performances across disciplines including but not limited to performance studies, media and communication studies, cultural studies, geography, history and sociology. The main themes for panels are: - The role of the media and the arts in transnational societies - Communication systems related to peace and conflict - Changes in space, place, mapping and boundaries in relation to culture and identity - Performance and cultural expression in indigenous and transnational communities - Culture and diaspora, particularly Indian arts and culture in the ASEAN nations The papers presented at the conference potentially could form an edited collection or journal issue. There will be a special panel on Indian arts and culture in the ASEAN diasporas as part of the symposium, which is funded by the Indian Studies Centre of Chulalongkorn University.
