Call for Applications Type: Sheng Yen Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chinese Buddhist Studies Institution: Department of Religion, Florida State University Location: Tallahassee, FL (USA) Date: 16.8.2016 – 1.5.2017 Deadline: 30.1.2016 __________________________________________________ It is my pleasure to announce that the Buddhist Studies Program in the Department of Religion at Florida State University is pleased to invite applications for a one-year Sheng Yen Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chinese Buddhist Studies. The term of the appointment is from August 16, 2016 to May 1, 2017, with the possibility of renewal for another year. About the Fellowship With the generous support of the Sheng Yen Educational Foundation, the Fellowship intends to advance the academic careers of outstanding young scholars whose area of research is Buddhism in China. Preference will be given to applicants whose work also addresses Chinese Buddhism’s historical interactions with other religious traditions and in other regions, including but not limited to South, East, Central, and Inner Asia. The Fellowship will provide them with time and funding to pursue their research along with the opportunity to gain teaching experience. Fellows are expected to teach one undergraduate course and one graduate course during the academic year under the Buddhist Studies Program at FSU. In addition, Fellows will give one public talk on their research as part of the Sheng Yen Lecture Series in Chinese Buddhist Studies, and they are expected to take part in regular Buddhist Studies events and workshops. Salary and benefits will be competitive. Qualifications Applicants must have their doctoral degrees in hand by June 30, 2016, and must be no more than six years out of their doctorate. Candidates who do not yet hold a Ph.D. but expect to by June 30, 2016, should supply a letter from their home institution confirming their schedule to completion. In addition to doctoral students approaching completion or recently graduated, those currently serving as assistant professors, lecturers, or postdoctoral scholars in other programs are welcome to apply, provided they have earned their degree within six years of the date of application. A Doctorate in Arts (D.A.), honorary doctorate, or any other degree equivalent is not considered a qualified Ph.D. for the purpose of application to this fellowship. Applicants should submit the following materials: - Curriculum vitae - Graduate school transcripts - A personal statement of no more than 2,000 words outlining previous research (including dissertation), the research the applicant will undertake during the term of the fellowship, future professional goals, as well as any other information deemed relevant to the application - A writing sample - A two- to four-page statement of teaching interests, along with a brief course proposal (with optional syllabi) of the course they intend to teach at FSU (Note: FSU courses normally meet a total of three hours per week throughout a sixteen-week semester) - Three confidential letters of recommendation Application Deadline and Notification of Award All application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be postmarked on or before Friday, January 30, 2016.
