Our world needs peace and harmony today more than ever. The intensity
of bloody clashes that are raging almost daily, due to political,
ethnic, religious, and sectarian conflicts, continues to claim the
lives of numerous innocent people across the globe. In the face of
such catastrophic tragedies and losses, humanity seems to have lost
the course of its direction and is desperate for finding solutions in
order to restore peace in the world.

It goes without saying that the role of religious principles and
moral values in shaping the minds of people is immeasurable. And
education, especially religious and moral education, plays a decisive
part in the process of formation and development of human mind and
personality. In other words, man’s conduct in life and his relations
with his fellow citizens and all other beings are generally governed
by the moral values and principles of the religion to which he
adheres. This being the case, then, we should reflect on the roots of
those values and principles and re-examine into their sources. What
is the most appropriate method for understanding and interpreting the
Scriptures today? What is the soundest and most effective method in
deriving principles from those Scriptures and relating them to the
life of an individual and society? In what way and how can these
religious principles and moral values be taught in educational
institutions? These are crucial and challenging questions.

Given that religion encompasses the entire life of man and also
influences him in every respect from his feelings to reasoning, one
cannot deny the power and role of religion in contributing to the
solutions of global problems. Therefore, there is an urgent need for
underscoring the positive aspects of religion and bringing out its
guiding principles and values for the wellbeing of society. At the
same time, one should look into possible causes of the manipulation
of those principles by certain people who misuse them for their
ill-motives or to justify their violence. This is one of the goals of
this symposium.

The Symposium will be shaped on the themes of “religious studies”,
“global peace” and “religion and global peace”. The report will be
prepared and discussed in the session in accordance with the
framework of this theme and related topics. Accordingly, both
religious research and global peace can be dealt in their respective
context. On the other hand, the symposium will not only contribute
to peace researchers but also to researchers from all fields who
study global religion.)
