Call for Papers Theme: European – Supra-European Subtitle: Nietzsche's View from Afar Type: 22nd/27th International Conference Institution: Friedrich Nietzsche Society Nietzsche-Gesellschaft Friedrich Nietzsche Stiftung Location: Naumburg/Saale (Germany) Date: 22.–24.9.2016 Deadline: 31.5.2016 __________________________________________________ (Deutsche Version unten) Nietzsche writes of the ‘good Europeans' that they must not only be 'supra-national' in their thinking, but in the end even 'supra-European': These ‘free, very free spirits’ must be able to leave Europe behind, at least occasionally and temporarily, and think beyond the horizon of Western civilisation. This conference – a joint, bilingual initiative of the Nietzsche-Gesellschaft and the Friedrich Nietzsche Society – will engage with this thought and with Nietzsche’s hopes for new syntheses and boundary-transgressions. The emphasis will be on Nietzsche’s genealogy of European culture and his thoughts on the ‘constitution’ of Europe in the broadest sense: on peoples and nations, values and arts, knowledge and religion. We will examine his concerns about the destiny of Europe, the crises his diagnoses (Nihilism, Decadence), as well as the normative categories underpinning his diagnoses. Two key issues form the centrepiece of the conference: boundary-transgressions – the removal of borders within Europe, the overcoming of national and other restrictions, the task of attaining a 'supra-European’ perspective on Europe – and syntheses: the tremendous syncretism of Greek antiquity and Nietzsche’s hopes for the future of European culture as a new, great synthesis. The conference theme includes Nietzsche’s historical reception, and we will also ask to what extent Nietzsche’s philosophy, while belonging to an entirely different historical situation, has preserved its diagnostic, critical and utopian potential for the current challenges confronting Europe. At this bilingual conference around half the plenary talks and panel papers will be in English and half in German. Nietzsches Blick aus der Ferne Von den 'guten Europäern' sagt Nietzsche, dass sie nicht nur ‘übernational’, sondern am Ende sogar ‘übereuropäisch’ denken müssen: Diese ‚freien, sehr freien Geister‘ müssen also, wenn auch nur gelegentlich und zeitweilig, Europa selbst hinter sich lassen und über den Horizont der westlichen Kultur hinausblicken. Der Kongress – zum ersten Mal tagen die Nietzsche-Gesellschaft und die Friedrich Nietzsche Society zusammen –setzt sich mit diesem Gedanken auseinander und mit den von Nietzsche erhofften Synthesen und Grenzüberschreitungen. Den Schwerpunkt bilden Nietzsches Genealogie der europäischen Kultur und seine Überlegungen zur ‚Konstitution‘ Europas im weitesten Sinn: zu Völkern und Nationen, Werten und Künsten, Erkenntnis und Religion. Untersucht werden Nietzsches Sorgen um das Schicksal Europas, die von ihm diagnostizierten Krisen (Nihilismus, Dekadenz) sowie die normativen Kategorien, die seinen Diagnosen zugrunde liegen. Im Mittelpunkt der Tagung stehen Grenzüberschreitungen – das von Nietzsche erhoffte Fallen innereuropäischer Grenzen, die Überwindung nationaler und anderer Beschränktheiten, die Aufgabe, mit ‚übereuropäischem‘ Blick auf Europa zu schauen – und Synthesen: der ungeheure Synkretismus der griechischen Antike und die künftige europäische Kultur als neue, große Synthese. Die Rezeptionsgeschichte gehört ebenfalls mit zum Thema. Wir werden uns nicht zuletzt der Frage stellen, inwiefern Nietzsches in einer ganz anderen historischen Situation entstandene Philosophie ihr diagnostisches, kritisches und utopisches Potential auch für die aktuellen europäischen Herausforderungen bewahrt.
