Call for Papers Theme: The philosophy of the monotheistic (world) religions in the early and high Middle Ages Subtitle: Christian, Jewish and Islamic thinkers in dialogue Type: International Conference Institution: Chair of Philosophy and of the History of Philosophy, Fulda Faculty of Theology Chair of Christian Philosophy of Religion, University of Freiburg International Association for Anselm Studies (IAAS) Location: Fulda (Germany) Date: 13.–18.9.2018 Deadline: 15.12.2017 __________________________________________________ (Deutsche Version unten) The Chair of Philosophy and of the History of Philosophy at Fulda Faculty of Theology, the Chair of Christian Philosophy of Religion at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Freiburg, and the International Association for Anselm Studies (IAAS) will hold a conference at Fulda Faculty of Theology from the 13th to the 16th September 2018. The subject of this joint conference will be „The philosophy of the monotheistic (world) religions in the early and high Middle Ages: Christian, Jewish and Islamic thinkers in dialogue“. The focus is on texts by Christian authors from the time of Anselm of Canterbury to Thomas Aquinas who, by means of genuinely philosophical arguments, defend fundamental tenets of Christian belief against objections by Jewish and Islamic authors. The aim is to present and interpret such texts within their individual historical contexts and to assess their rational plausibility. In addition, the ideas of roughly contemporaneous Jewish and Islamic authors who make use of arguments based on insights from natural intellect and reason in order to prove the truth of their own religion and to counter Christian convictions are to be presented and opened to discussion amongst the participants of the conference. This conference is intended to provide an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of ideas amongst specialists; for this reason, the maximum number of papers in addition to those by the invited speakers is limited to 10–12. Two travel scholarships of a maximum of € 200 Euro are available to doctoral or early career researchers to allow them to attend the conference. They will also receive free accommodation in one of the guestrooms (en suite, incl. breakfast) of the Fulda Seminary. If desired, guestrooms are also available to other speakers at a moderate cost. Attending the meals at the beginning and the end of the conference is optional. There will be no separate registration fee. The conference languages are German, English and French. The three public lectures will be 45 minutes at most, followed by a maximum of 30 minutes of discussion. Papers in the different sessions will be 30 minutes at most and are also followed by a maximum of 30 minutes of discussion. It is intended to bring the contributions of this conference together as proceedings in the series Fuldaer Studien (published by Herder-Verlag) following a review process. The conference will begin in the evening on Thursday, 13th September 2018, with a dinner for all participants and a public lecture in the historic lecture hall (auditorium maximum) of Fulda Faculty of Theology. This will be followed by a reception for conference participants by the rector of Fulda Faculty of Theology. The conference will close on Sunday, 16th September, with the opportunity of attending mass in Fulda Cathedral and, following this, an optional guided sightseeing programme to discover Carolingian Fulda. This will end with lunch for the participants of this excursion. September 2018 veranstalten der Lehrstuhl für Philosophie und Geschichte der Philosophie in der Theologischen Fakultät Fulda, der Lehrstuhl für Christliche Religionsphilosophie in der Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Freiburg und die International Association for Anselm Studies (IAAS) eine Tagung in der Theologischen Fakultät Fulda zum Thema „Philosophie der monotheistischen (Welt-) Religionen im frühen und hohen Mittelalter: Christliche, jüdische und islamische Denker im Gespräch.“ Auf dieser Tagung sollen Texte von christlichen Autoren aus der Zeit von Anselm von Canterbury bis Thomas von Aquin, die mit genuin philosophischen Argumenten elementare christliche Glaubensüberzeugungen gegen Einwände von Seiten jüdischer und islamischer Autoren verteidigen, in ihrem jeweiligen historischen Diskussionskontext vorgestellt, ausgelegt und auf ihre rationale Plausibilität hin beurteilt werden. Darüber hinaus sollen auch Überlegungen jüdischer und islamischer Autoren aus ungefähr diesem Zeitraum, die für die Wahrheit ihrer jeweiligen Religion und gegen christliche Überzeugungen mit natürlichen Verstandes- und Vernunfteinsichten argumentieren, vorgestellt und gemeinsam diskutiert werden. Weil diese Fachtagung die Gelegenheit zu einem intensiven Austausch unter Fachleuten bieten möchte, ist neben den invited speakers ein Kreis von höchstens 10–12 Referenten/innen vorgesehen. Für zwei Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen stehen für die Teilnahme an dieser Tagung Reisekosten-Stipendien in Höhe von jeweils maximal 200.- € bei freier Unterbringung in einem Gästezimmer des Priesterseminars Fulda (mit Dusche/WC; Frühstück) zur Verfügung. Den übrigen Referenten/innen stehen diese Gästezimmer bei Bedarf zu moderaten Preisen zur Verfügung. Die Teilnahme an den gemeinsamen Mahlzeiten zu Beginn und zum Abschluss der Tagung ist optional. Eine Tagungsgebühr wird darüber hinaus nicht erhoben. Die Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch. Für die drei öffentlichen Vorträge steht eine maximale Redezeit von 45 Minuten mit anschließender Diskussionszeit von maximal 30 Minuten, für die Sektionsvorträge steht eine maximale Redezeit von 30 Minuten mit anschließender Diskussionszeit von ebenfalls maximal 30 Minuten zur Verfügung. Die Beiträge zu dieser Tagung sollen nach einem Evaluationsverfahren in einem Tagungsband zusammengefasst werden, der in der Reihe Fuldaer Studien im Herder-Verlag publiziert werden soll. Die Tagung beginnt am Donnerstag, dem 13. September 2018, mit einem gemeinsamen Abendessen der Tagungsteilnehmer, einem öffentlichen Abendvortrag im historischen Auditorium maximum der Theologischen Fakultät Fulda und einem anschließenden Empfang der Tagungsteilnehmer durch den Rektor der Theologischen Fakultät Fulda. Die Tagung endet am Sonntag, dem 16. September, mit der Möglichkeit zum Besuch eines Gottesdienstes im Dom zu Fulda und zur anschließenden Teilnahme an einem geführten Besichtigungsprogramm auf den Spuren des karolingischen Fulda, das mit einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen der Exkursionsteilnehmer ausklingen soll.
