The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track
assistant professor position or early associate professor position
with tenure, beginning fall 2018.

Description

We are seeking an assistant or early associate professor specializing
in philosophy of race. Area of competence is open. The typical
teaching load is 2 courses per semester, and involves teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate levels.

Our department has a longstanding interest in philosophy of race,
which has been part of our curriculum since 2009. We regularly host
visiting speakers in philosophy of race, and many of our
undergraduate and graduate students and faculty have strong interests
in this area. The successful candidate will be a central member of a
vibrant intellectual community that prizes the ability to converse
across philosophical traditions and sub-disciplines and values
interdisciplinary engagement. We are especially interested in
applications from qualified candidates who are committed to
practicing philosophy in an inclusive and cooperative mode, while
achieving rigor and excellence in their research and teaching.

The University of Oklahoma is a growing Carnegie-R1 (Highest research
activity) public research university located in the city of Norman,

Qualifications

Required qualifications

- The candidate must be ABD in philosophy or a related discipline at
  the time of application, with evidence that the PhD will have been
  defended prior to the fall 2018 start date. (If you do not already
  have your PhD in hand, please specifically discuss how you meet this
  qualification in your letter of interest. Describe how much of your
  dissertation is already complete, and explain your plan for
  completion by August 15, 2018 deadline.)
- The candidate must have a record of research in philosophy of race.

Preferred qualifications

We prefer candidates with the following qualifications:

- demonstrated excellence of research in philosophy of race
- ability to enrich our department’s curriculum by offering courses
  in one or more cultural traditions we do not already cover, e.g.,
  Islamic philosophy, Africana philosophy, Native American philosophy,
  Latino/-a/-x philosophy, or Indian philosophy
- ability to contribute to our department’s curriculum in
  metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and/or philosophy of science
- evidence, within research and teaching, of attention to
  intersections of race with other aspects of identity such as gender,
  class, and disability
- having served as the instructor of record in courses at the
  university level
- demonstrated excellence as an instructor
- demonstrated commitment to pedagogical approaches that foster the
  success of students from diverse backgrounds

Evidence of teaching excellence may take the form of a confidential
letter about the quality of your teaching, student evaluations of
teaching, and/or a discussion within your teaching statement about
your approach to teaching. To ensure full consideration, please
submit all materials by November 15, 2017. We request that, if
possible, candidates upload an anonymized version of their writing
sample(s), with the candidate’s name, affiliation, and any other
identifying information (e.g., acknowledgements) removed. If the
paper has been published, it is fine to submit an anonymized
penultimate draft.

Three letters of recommendation will be required for each candidate.
