Call for Publications Theme: Moral Progress Publication: Yearbook Practical Philosophy in a Global Perspective Date: Vol. 3 (2019) Deadline: 26.4.2019 __________________________________________________ The Yearbook Practical Philosophy in a Global Perspective is a forum for original research articles in political, moral, social, and legal philosophy, as well as in neighbouring disciplines (broadly conceived as sociology, psychology, law, economy, cultural studies, political and environmental sciences) that concentrate on, or can be suitably related to, questions of a global dimension. The yearbook has two sections: section one features general research articles pertaining to the scope of the yearbook, and section two unites papers under a special topic that changes every year. We invite submissions to both the general section and the special section, the topic of which is 'moral progress'. There are two stages to the selection of papers. Abstracts between 500 and 750 words can be submitted until April 26th, 2018. Upon preliminary acceptance by the editors we ask for submission of the full papers (6 000 to 8 000 words). The yearbook will be published in summer 2019 by Karl Alber publishing. The scope of the yearbook is broad: no method, field, or school is excluded. Inclusion in the yearbook depends solely on the academic quality and originality of the articles. We welcome contributions by early career scholars. All submissions undergo double blind review. Submissions to the General Section Practical philosophy is concerned with questions of a global dimension in different ways. Globalization, pluralism, and intradisciplinary diversification challenge received understandings of practical reason, culture, politics, and value. Accordingly, many traditional problems – such as the justification of political order, the form and content of ethical agency, or the constitution and relation of knowledge and power – are re-examined. Answers that had been taken for granted and appeals to institutions that we have become used to (e.g. the state) need to be revisited. Last but not least, a whole range of new problems has occurred in the context of climate change and as a result of the shortcomings of the global financial system. The Yearbook Practical Philosophy in a Global Perspective publishes in its general section original philosophical research articles that deal with any of these or with related problems, and it is open for contributions from neighbouring disciplines that clearly exhibit a philosophical orientation. Submissions to the Special Section: Moral Progress The idea that humanity has progressed not only in various scientific and technological but also in the genuinely moral terms is found both in philosophy and in culture more generally. It prevails even in light of the many setbacks and catastrophes the 20th century has witnessed as well as the promises regarding equality and emancipation that remain unfulfilled. The achievement of peace and security, abolition of slavery, the fight against poverty, and an increase in freedom and liberties that goes hand in hand with enlightened views toward historically disadvantaged groups as well as with respect for the natural environment and a reduction in violent human-animal-relations can still be counted among criteria of moral progress (see e.g. Jamieson 2016). This year’s special section invites contributions that examine, criticise, and further develop this idea. Paper proposals can relate but need not be limited to: - Metaethical perspectives on moral progress - Moral progress and rationalism - Moral progress and sentimentalism - Concepts of moral progress in ethics, political or social philosophy - Perspectives on moral progress from the history of philosophy - Language and moral progress (e.g. metaphors like the ‘expanding circle’ or ‘progress’ itself, language as both means and testament of moral progress) - Criticising the idea of moral progress - Indexing or measuring moral progress - Examples of moral progress (e.g. in the context of slavery, women, animals, hunger, health, education) - Moral progress and moral learning - Moral learning and literature - Drivers of moral progress (e.g. supererogation, other regarding attitudes, social criticism, moral imagination, education) - Economy, law, politics, and religion as cultural and social preconditions (or hindrances) of moral progress - Scale, context, and moral progress - Moral progress in a global perspective - Moral progress and the danger of moral blindness (e.g. “moralism”, moral zeal, self-righteousness, single-issue activism) Note that the special section relates to the following conference in Munich on the 21st and 22nd of June 2018: https://www.hfph.de/forschung/drittmittelprojekte/rottendorf-projekt/symposium/symposium-2018 The Yearbook Practical Philosophy in a Global Perspective is published through Alber publishing and features articles in German and English. Das Jahrbuch besteht aus einem allgemeinen Beitragsteil, in dem grundsätzliche Arbeiten zu diesem Themenfeld veröffentlicht werden, und einem Schwerpunktteil, der jedes Jahr unter ein neues Thema gestellt wird. Dieses Thema wird auch in den jeweiligen Symposien des Forschungs- und Studienprojekts der Rottendorf-Stiftung an der Hochschule für Philosophie München behandelt. Dieses Projekt widmet sich seit über dreißig Jahren einer philosophisch orientierten Reflexion globaler Themen. Jedes Jahrbuch enthält zudem ein Interview mit führenden Fachvertreter*innen, ausgehend vom Schwerpunktthema. Das Jahrbuch erscheint beim Verlag Karl Alber. Hiermit bitten wir um Beiträge sowohl zum allgemeinen Beitragsteil als auch zum Schwerpunktteil, in dem es in diesem Jahr um das Thema „Moralischer Fortschritt“ geht. Bis zum 26. April 2018 können Abstracts von 500-750 Wörtern eingereicht werden, die von den Herausgebern geprüft werden. Nach positiver Begutachtung wird um Einreichung der fertig ausgearbeiteten Beiträge (6 000 bis 8 000 Wörter, exkl. Literaturangaben) gebeten. Das Jahrbuch erscheint im Sommer 2019 beim Karl Alber Verlag. Hinsichtlich der philosophischen Methode bestehen keine Einschränkungen. Allein die wissenschaftliche Qualität und Innovationskraft der Beiträge sind ausschlaggebend. Beiträge des philosophischen Nachwuchses sind erwünscht. Alle eingereichten Beiträge werden doppelt-blind begutachtet. Einreichungen zum allgemeinen Beitragsteil Die praktische Philosophie beschäftigt sich heute mit globalen Fragen in unterschiedlicher Weise: Vor dem Hintergrund der Globalisierung müssen traditionelle Probleme – wie etwa die Begründung politischer Ordnung, Modus und Inhalt ethischen Handelns, oder Verfasstheit und Verhältnis von Episteme und Macht – jenseits eurozentrischer Denkgewohnheiten neu verhandelt werden. Selbstverständlich erscheinende Antworten, die auf den Staat oder andere „klassisch“ gewordene Akteure verweisen, werden zunehmend fragwürdig. Nicht zuletzt sind mit den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels und den Unzulänglichkeiten des globalen Finanzsystems ganz neue Problemlagen entstanden. Das Jahrbuch Praktische Philosophie in globaler Perspektive veröffentlicht in seinem allgemeinen Beitragsteil Arbeiten, die sich in diesem Problemfeld verorten, und ist offen für Arbeiten aus benachbarten Disziplinen, die philosophisch anschlussfähig sind. Einreichungen zum Schwerpunktteil: Moralischer Fortschritt Die Idee, dass es menschheitsgeschichtlich so etwas wie moralischen Fortschritt zu verzeichnen gäbe, findet sich in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen in Philosophie und Kultur. Diese Idee hält sich selbst in Anbetracht krasser Rückschritte wie der Zivilisationsbrüche des 20. Jahrhunderts oder auch nur angesichts der unvollständig eingelösten Versprechen in Sachen Antidiskriminierung. Die Einhegung von Kriegen, die Abschaffung von Sklaverei, von Hunger, eine zunehmende gesellschaftliche Freiheit bei gleichzeitiger Aufgeklärtheit, die die Gleichberechtigung historisch benachteiligter Gruppen ebenso mit sich bringt wie Respekt für die natürliche Umwelt und einen Rückgang von Gewalt in den Beziehungen von Menschen und anderen Tieren, dürfen nach wie vor überwiegend als Kriterien moralischen Fortschritts gelten (vgl. etwa Jamieson 2016). Im diesjährigen Schwerpunkt soll diese Vorstellung genauer untersucht, kritisiert und weiterentwickelt werden.
