-- Y2K Update --

It is likely that there will be a surge in traditional mail being
sent as the new millennium approaches due to the normal seasonal increase
and as people become concerned that electronic mail may not operate
correctly. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service faces a "major
challenge" in upgrading its computer systems to avoid the Year 2000
problem, according to a report released last month by the General
Accounting Office.

While the majority of mutual fund money is still going into the S&P 500
Index funds, investors may want to consider looking into Total Market
Index funds like the Wilshire 5000 that represent a broader
combination of large, mid-cap and small-cap companies.

OpenIPO is a new, auction-based IPO method designed to

put every bidder on equal footing, whether they are an individual
or an institution. Taking a cue from the US Treasury, this method
of initial public offerings lets the market set the optimal share price.

With "D-day" just around the corner - that's April 15th-the IRS has
launched a program to encourage electronic filing (e-filing). They say
"e-file is faster and more accurate than filing a paper return and
you're less likely to receive an error notice". Those selected to
participate in the program are said to get refunds back in half the
time of those filing the traditional way and if you're one of us who
owes Uncle Sam, they'll even take your credit card for payments.

When you're armed with the correct instructions, the right forms and
all the pertinent publications, your filing problems will be a lot less
taxing. The IRS has set up a site that allows you to browse online and
select tax publications for download.

If you end up paying taxes this year you may want to look at some tax
saving investments, since capital gains garner strong interest from the
IRS and the most successful investor can be taxed at a rate of up to
39%. This article gives the pros and cons on investing in these type of
funds.
