It's not Ion's job to set the keyboard layout. The place to configure it is something like /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/X11/xorg.org if you're using such a flavour of X -- which I assume -- and X sets the map on startup. Note that if you're using gdm, it has the tendency of gnome programs to fuck up the entire system, including the keymap. In that case, I recommend dumping gnome crap and switching to some sane display manager. (You can also try restoring the keymap with xmodmap or setkxbmap in .xsession or whatever.) -- Tuomo
