It should be easy to write a shell script for that, to run in an
xterm... :) But, indeed, some kind of big and simple menu system 
for sort of kiosk use of Ion would be nice. One that would switch
to a running program if there's one, and otherwise start it. Perhaps
this could appear as a "sidebar" to a workspace... Actually, there
is a rather simplistic tiling window manager specialised for this 
kind of use, but I fail to recall its name.

Indeed. Computers today are the worst junk there is. They don't last,
and they are not meant to last. People are meant to buy a new computer
every two years (and destroy the planet and feed Economic Growth in the
process), even if they really wouldn't need one, either because it has
broken down, it can't run the latest bloatware anymore, or it can't be 
ugpraded, because all the interfaces have changed.
