I managed this fine a couple of years ago on my University Solaris
account. It was just a case of the standard ./configure and make, IIRC.

I have done likewise. Apart from solaris compiler fighting, the home
directory install went perfectly the normal and expected way. I also
installed lua there first. After a bit of rtfm, now when I log into a
ray (using "CDE" as the desktop selection), ion comes up. Joy.
