I use this with ayttm, which pops up a transient window showing
connection status while connecting to the server, but disappears once
connected. Occasionally, the "act:" message shows up when I start up
and stays up until I restart ion, despite the disappearance of the
transient. I think it's because I start ayttm from my .xsession, and
ion may not be catching the disappearance of the transient because of
load.

I haven't looked into it much, though. If you're interested I can do
so.
