Tuomo has made many improvements to the dock since the original code was
submitted. For some of your questions, the answer will be "impossible in
ion2, switch to ion3."

This is the way the dock in ion2 is designed. There is no way in ion2 to
reserve screen space for the dock. Switch to ion3.

Use the toggle_dock function, bound to DEFAULT_MOD+space by default.
