I think there's a large range of flash sizes for ESP8266 chips. My ESP8266 board (the wemos D1 mini) has 4MB of flash. https://www.wemos.cc/product/d1-mini.html

The port should be much smaller, which means it would be easier to accept your contributions and later maintain them.
