It looks to me more like Amherst is screwing up somehow.  I'm not an expert on
TCP protocol, but the differences between the logs of the successful mail and
the failed mail to Amherst look like Amherst is replying to your mail's TCP
connection incorrectly.  It replies with an ACK alone (A) instead of the
normal TCP second packet with SYN and ACK both set (
