If you set the firewall up as a bridge using 2 interfaces (no IP
addresses) and have a third for the management interface (with an IP
address), the students will never be able to see the firewall. Nothing
for them to hack at. We're running that configuration for an entire
campus.

After doing a fair amount of searching in tutorials, faqs, and archives
I have not been able to find an answer, so here goes:

I am currently in the process of setting up a firewall to protect us
from roughly 2000 student machines. Is there a performance advantage to
setting up a routing firewall vs. a bridging firewall with ipfilter?

Thanks,
