Wow, how annoying to have your "real name" be set as "."

debugging tools:
sniff the network.   (snoop, tcpdump, etc).

Does it send out a DNS query (or 5) and wait 30 seconds per?
What's the mail process in the middle of while it hangs.



80% of the time it's about DNS.
It *might* be about ident, but something is going out
and waiting for a timeout.
It's doubtfully anything to do with ipfilter.

I might take ipfilter down long enough to send a message
and see if it's different.

If it IS, then start looking at (perhaps removing) each rule
