Your AT&T US Model iPhone works just fine overseas, if you want to pay the roaming charged or unlock it with a local SIM (microSIM) card. I used my 3GS in Japan when I was there last and will use my iPhone 4 when we go to Japan this year. I keep data roaming off but have voice roaming on in case of emergency and turn on data roaming when I have an emergency (I used iSSH from a food court in Osaka to log in to a server in Salt Lake City to fix a mail problem after receiving a phone call from Germany when I was last there).
