Not sure what you mean by "renders ASCII useless" and why this single
incarnation of an ereader makes it such?

Anyway, my suggestions:

- provide a bookmarking ability (on a per book basis)
      - perhaps it's there, I couldn't quite figure out what all the
"toolbar" icons represented
- don't use the '+' to open the toolbar
      - it's vague as to exactly what this does since it typically
represents adding something
- provide the ability to goto a specific page
     - don't let them skip the Guttenberg preamble if they haven't
viewed them before
     - cover flow would achieve a similar affect, but IMHO is not a
replacement
- parse the table of contents and allow the user to use it for navigation.
- show the guttenberg preamble on a single page, on one of the ones I
looked at it was >13 pages
- allow me to start viewing a book directly from the search results page
      - doing so should automatically add it to my reading list
      - should work from any browsing page once it is up
- it's an iPhone app and it looks like you are using the ASCII text
version, find iphone friendly
  data and provide links
      - e.g. if the text contains a location, let me select it and have
it come up in Google Maps

Good work so far, keep it going.
