Mobile Safari only allows animated GIFs up to a certain size (that is
a function of the dimensions and number of frames).  If the images are
larger than the limit, Safari only renders the first frame.  Check out
Apple's iphone web app documentation for exact numbers (and that
should be a prerequisite anyhow):
