Ed - The Dashcode RSS template also has similar restrictions. It requires the feed to be hosted on the same domain as the web app.
Not sure that I've heard of a workaround outside making it a native app. Not sure you wanted to do that though. Shout out again if you want to go from web app to native... there are ways to get there with a minimum of fuss.
