Hey there web dev group! This is kind of directed to iUI devs. I think
we need to create a dedicated iUI type framework for the iPad.
I'm not sure what you mean by "dedicated" No matter how you look at it
there will be a lot of commonality between the two.
I have certainly thought about creating an iuipad.js and iuipad.css that
are based on the current iui.js and iui.css and use the same images and
CSS themes, but mostly as a temporary measure.
As you know, I would very much like to create the ability to have the
same page dynamically adjust to iPhone or iPad. This adds some
complexity, but not much considering the resulting benefits and
flexibility. From a software development perspective we want to keep
as much as common as possible so we are not duplicating effort. I don't
think that the iPad support planned for 0.40 is going to add much size
(in lines or kilobytes) to iui.css so I don't think size will be an issue.
Mixing
iUI with the iPhone and iPad could be helpful, but it might get too
confusing. I like Sean Gilligan's idea and all of the iPad/iUI demos,
but we might be stretching it a bit here.
Please remember that what is currently available is pre-alpha and I had
to put it down for a month. That is causing a lot of confusion for
people right now and is one reason I prefer to keep the discussion over
on iui-developers. It's not really meant for use by people who aren't
comfortable developing on iUI itself. It will be a lot easier when
there is a development, alpha, or beta release.
Even when a final release is available developing a site/app that works
on touch phones and touch tables will be harder than developing for just
one or the other -- but it will still be easier than building two
sites/apps. iUI will continue to support developing phone only sites
and will allow tablet only sites as well. You won't be forced to
support both in a single page.
I see this as a warning that
we shouldn't have too much of a good thing (i.e. iUI for every
iDevice).
I think there is a strong demand to support all devices in the
(not-officially named or specified and constantly being redefined)
category. Most users want to support more than just iDevices (aka Apple
devices)
Those are just my thoughts on this new situation. My bottom line is
create a separate framework based on iUI, but not integrated.
Please feel free to bring this up for discussion on the iui-developers
list. You are also welcome to use Mercurial to create a clone/fork of
iUI and demonstrate what a separate iUI-style framework for
iPad/touch-tablet might look like.
Regards,
Sean
