If KKOL is not coming in well in northeast Seattle, but you know that they are operating from the Tacoma site, you've got good evidence that they are on night pattern. It's not ironclad evidence, but if the day pattern were running, I would expect you to report a good signal (though perhaps not a great one). The night pattern is narrower than the day pattern and is centered on the northwest. The day pattern is broader and is centered on the northeast. Fading is a possibility in your location because the short towers produce lots of high-angle radiation, but regular rapid fades (you said that you wondered whether there was a SAH between the ship-based Tx and the land-based facility) seem unlikely to me.
