I think the best answer was yours, depends on what he's looking for. The
receiver that you use, the Drake R8 etc. seems to be the receiver of choice
for many serious MW DX'ers. I prefer to have something I can work on, tune
up etc. so I use boatanchors, some of which are: R-390-A which is probably
as good as the best of today, Hammarlund HQ-180, National HRO-60 and
Hammarlund SP-600 all of which give a very good accounting of themselves in
the medium wave bands. I believe the state of the art in antennas today are
2 LW's (best of which is a beverage if you have the space) and other outside
antennas such as the pennant etc. and and very importantly a phaser with the
outside antennas especially the LW's.
I think there is a lot of bang for the buck in the old Hammarlunds
especially if you are on a limited budget, HQ129,s 140's and 150's (rare and
more expensive) are all good radios and usually can be had for less than
three hundred bucks which won't buy a lot of radio brand new nowadays.

Subject: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2006 07:38:23 -0800
Hi All,
My brother, who lives in another state want's to know what the best
receiver
and antenna is. I'm presuming he means for the BCB since he used to or
maybe still doe's DX. I told him in an email a few weeks ago, it depends
on
what he is looking for but apparently he forgot about that and would still
like to know what's the best. So, I pose this question to you. In your
opinion, what do you think are the best set-ups for small, medium and large
budgets?
Thanks and 73- Doug
