Interesting that Colin and I ended up with very similar recorders. I have been looking and thinking for a couple of months about a "real recorder" not a usually too small teenybopper MP3 player that happens to record. I plan to be doing a bunch of serious DX recording on several overseas trips in the next two years, so after some serious talk with my piggy bank (GULP!), I finally bit the bullet and bought the R-09 from the well-known Edirol folks. Its very much like Colin's H4 and in the same ballpark, pricewise. It lists for about $500 but I got mine on ebay, new in sealed box, for $330 USD with a small 64 MB SD card aboard. The latest version of the firmware that I downloaded and installed handles the new HD SD cards above 2 GB. Both of these machines are wonderful professional tools.... I liked the Edirol better for two reasons: the Edirol name is highly respected in digital recording and the controls are widely spread over all six sides of the case.... with seldom used controls as slide switches on the back, etc.
The R-09 has line-in recording down to 64 K MP3 (stereo-only) and will handle 70 hours on a $30 2GB SD card. It has switchable AGC on the record level and plus and minus buttons for input level and output level as well. Most buttons only control a single function.... OH HAPPY DAY :>) The control panel LCD is B&W but very high resolution and quite bright (controllable). Anyway, if you are considering a really serious recorder.... the digital equivalent of those wonderful Marantz PMD cassette recorders of yore, these two machines may be your ticket to ride! I've had mine under intense for 24 hours and am in serious love! (about 4 hours of record time on two AAs, just like the H4) http://www.edirol.net/products/en/R-09/ Its about the size of a pack of King Size filter cigarettes. Take a close look at them both, if you are considering...... John B. At 08:55 PM 2/8/2007 -0800, you wrote: > > The Zoom H4.
