Patrick,

I disagree. I have been doing family genealogy since the late 60's
-- probably about the time that I began to DX. In genealogy, it is
usually "easy" to locate an ancestor's date of birth and death, or at
least the years, place of birth/death, etc. Marriage dates, names of the
spouse and children can be located, but that tells us very little.

For a moment, think about a parent, grandparent, sibling or other
relative you know. Forget the dates, locations and the like, but
describe the person so someone who never met the person can better
understand the person: hobbies, likes, dislikes, the serious side, the
funny side, military service experiences, etc.

    On March 4th, a well-known DXer had a birthday - I oopsed by not
mentioning it. Still, that's about the only personal thing I know about
the DXer.

Another well known DXer has a fascination with electrical
sub-stations, and once worked on Bermuda. This oldster's birthday is in
May, and boy is he old...well, he's older than me. Although he says
little in person, his written word frequents these pages.

Who is a long-time DXer, also well-known, that collects penguins?

Here's a real tough one: who was a DXer, worked for a phone company
and was known to walk around his neighborhood (or elsewhere) and hit
power poles (the wooden type) with a baseball bat?

My point is this -- facts and figures about a person are nice, but
that tells us virtually nothing about the person as a whole. We DO need
to preserve this for future generations.

    Comments, Mr. Krumudgeon?

          Mike
