Sounds, great, right? WRONG!!! No RFI? Hah! How do you think one changes the
voltage from 120V ac to a couple of volts dc to power the LEDs without
requiring huge, expensive line-frequency transformers or resistors that
dissipate tens of watts (at least)? You do what everybody does these days;
you use a switching regulator (usually a buck converter). And what is the
most noticeable unwanted byproduct of switching regulators? RFI. Now, it may
be possible to operate the converters at, say, 3 MHz. That really shrinks
the transformers and moves the RFI up in frequency beyond the AM band but it
will certainly interfere with other kinds of receivers in your house. Of
course, at a switching frequency of 3 MHz, the filters can use nice small
components, but there clearly is no prima facie case for LEDs being
inherently quieter RF-wise than CFLs.
