Nick, I don't have a shortwave I can use at home, thanks to horrendous noise. Everything at home is battery-powered except the housemate and her cat, and I wish they were so they would run down. During the week is when I'm listening, and its during my 27-minute 35-mile dash from home to work, where I start at 0400 daily. Believe me, that's hell for a night person!
This morning, my strongest carriers were on 981 and 1242, though neither were anywhere near promising.
