Actually, the one I had that made things too muffled was 3 kHz total
bandwidth, in other words, +/- 1.5 kHz (I think. It might have been as
low as 2.5, but I don't have a proper datasheet for these old style
Murata filters).

I think you could have used the +/- 3 kHz filter, or even the +/- 2
kHz job, and still have satisfactory listening (if they were
available).
Need to experiment, though.
