Hello All, The interest in the superb Kaito WRX911 analog Ultralight radio (and its much cheaper Tecsun R911 and R9012 variants) has certainly been booming among the enthusiast group, leading to questions overseas about extending the frequency coverage of 520-1610 kHz models to cover the entire X band. Actually, this will also probably be an issue for North American purchasers of the least expensive R911 and R9012 models from China, via eBay sellers "dpmega" and "tquchina." Like my unit from Amazon.com, all Kaito WRX911 units sold in North America should already have the frequency coverage set at 520-1700 kHz. Purchasers of these units need only to perform a standard alignment (loopstick coil and 1400 kHz trimmer peak) to ensure optimum performance. WRX911 units sold outside of North America probably have the upper limit set at 1610 kHz, since the X band is typically not used for broadcasting in those countries. WRX911 models can certainly be tweaked to cover the X band if necessary, just as the SRF-59 models set at the 1610 kHz upper limit have been routinely adjusted to cover up to 1700 kHz in alignments here (for Rick Reale in New Zealand, and others). Concerning the Tecsun R911 and R9012 models from the Chinese eBay sellers (which almost certainly have AM coverage set at 520-1610 kHz), it is highly likely that these also can easily be extended to 1700 kHz. Since I have yet to receive my own models from China, a detailed procedure for accomplishing this cannot yet be promulgated, but the adjustment involves tweaking a trimmer on the tuning capacitor to extend the upper limit, as well as tweaking a slug on an inductive adjustment to maintain the lower limit at 520 kHz. In multiple alignment on analog AM receivers, I have yet to see an analog model which could not be tweaked this way-- even the venerable Sony ICF-S5W has been easily adjusted to cover the X band, in multiple alignments here. Purchasers of the ultra-cheap Tecsun R911 and R9012 models should have no problem enjoying thrilling DX on the X band, once the frequency adjustment and alignment procedures are drafted, and promulgated. In the meantime, feel confident to invest around $15 without further concern :>) 73, Gary DeBock **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make meals for Under $10.
