You BOG directivity will be increased by two things - a) going somewhat longer - 700-800' total, and b) using some sort of termination at one end or the other. At the length you used, unterminated, it's more like a basic longwire, especially given your location where there's less than optimal ground conductivity.
For portable use, I'd suggest terminating by way of a detachable 'fan' or 3 or 4 lengths of wire, each 20-30' long to be laid out at the end. Experimentation with using a resistor between the BOG and the fan would be helpful as well. Making it detachable allows you to switch ends to switch direction.
