I have had reception like this on old DX440's from Radio Shack, ATS-803's, Drake R8 and modified E100's You can buy an E100 for < $50 now and add a bigger ferrite to it or couple it to a loop. The E1 retails for around $499 (maybe less) and the benefit is: It has very good BW choices down to 2.3khz with Passband tuning that works fairly well in AM and Sync mode (although it is not true blue PB Tuning like the Drake) and you can select the sideband. In the case of most Alaskan receptions from the West Coast, any radio could hear it - because it was utterly in the clear after KFI dropped into its sunrise. Alaskans and Hawaiians have always been my weak spot with DXing. I do not think I have heard a Hawaiian on the west coast since 1976. According to DX-Guru, Patrick Martin, they do not "get out" as well as they used to. -- ..........................................................................................
