Willis,
Tnx for the poser. Very happy to see that I haven't lost ALL my old memories. My main problem is when my wife asks me to do something! Senior moment(s) :-) .

You would be correct! It was less than 30 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
It was January 1942.

Only ole folks would have gotten that one correct. :)

Willis,

Inre your Rose Bowl question. Without resorting to Google I recall somewhere back at the start of WW II, 41 or 42 the game was moved to Durham NC where Duke played somebody from the Pacific Coast Conference (can't remember just who). They were afraid of a Japanese attack so changed the venue. Good question!

Yes, New Year's day was, please note the WAS, a great football day. We would be up very early, go downtown Dallas to see the Cotton bowl parade, then in the afternoon watch the game on TV. That was late 50's into the early 60's.

[Don't like the Outback, you can't throw your peanuts on the floor. Wish the local one would move to Seattle.]

Now, I never get to see the Cotton bowl. What ever happened to it?
You mentioned the Rose Bowl. Do you know what year the Rose bowl was NOT played in Pasadena and why?

Although this is borderline DX related, I just need to vent.

While growing up, New Year's day was always spent getting a football overdose watching many bowl games on TV. Since I am a bit of a football nut, this was one of my favorite days.

Well, today I'm watching the Outback Bowl (love the Outback - but they closed all their restaurants in Seattle so no more)... and I check the schedule to make sure I don't miss the Rose Bowl. Guess what, no Rose Bowl on network TV... even worse, no more bowl games on network TV. I have basic cable TV, so I don't get ESPN, which means I won't be able to SEE any more games today.

Naturally, almost ALL the bowl games are on the RADIO and it's FREE!!! (I am listening to the Gator Bowl now)... at least I will be able to listen for the rest of the day.

... and here I thought this country was against monopolies... ha!

Best of DX in 2012...
