I think what Niel means in this instance, Paul, by "doesn't sound like a song I would expect to hear on AM radio" is the fact that 99.9% of songs that you hear on oldies or "classic hits" stations on AM are songs that were released as singles, and "Night By Night" never was. And knowing what I know about the Steely Dan catalogue, Niel's right, that is a rather odd song to be hearing on AM. The one station that jumps out at me as a possibility is "Uptown" in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, a station that plays a hybrid of nostalgia (Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and others of that ilk) and middle-of-the-road (Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, et al). A jazz-oriented studio group like Steely Dan could fit into that format very nicely. 73, Rick Dau South Omaha, Nebraska

Oldies stations are become "classic hits" and this in theory could fit an oldies or classic hits format. Without more details, it'd be real hard to pin down who you heard, meaning, what station.
