Parallel stations WOZN 1670 Madison WI and WOZN-FM 106.7 Mount Horeb WI, the
former WTDY AM and FM, made their anticipated change to sports CBS Sports Radio
at 1100 CST today 1/2. Programming began with a CBS Sports Radio sports
newscast at ToH followed by the Jim Rome Show, which moved to CBS Sports
effective today. The stations use the on-air slogan "The Zone."
.
The former newstalk stations have been in hiaitus since Wednesday November 21
last year, when management fired all but one of its staff and replaced its
programming with Christmas music (while still using the old WTDY calls). Almost
immediately, reliable sources were saying that the stations would eventually
become sports talk as part of the CBS Sports Network. On December 28 calls were
changed to WOZN and a bizarre few days of stunting began. Programming consisted
almost entirely of two heavy metal songs played back-to-back over and over and
over again-- Guns and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" and Metallica "Wherever I
May Roam." Both were no doubt references to the Jim Rome Show, one of the
feature programs in the new CBS Sports Radio lineup. "Welcome to the Jungle" is
his bumper music and show theme and "Roam" is another way to spell Rome (and
also may refer to that show "roaming " from competitor WTSO 1070 Madison). The
only other programming during this period was a lo!
cally produced agriculture show M-F 5-6 AM by the station's farm director (the
one staffer not fired). The obligatory ToH legal ID was the only thing heard
besides the two songs during the stunting hours-- no off-hour ID's and no
messages as to future format. This programming lasted right up to 11 AM this
morning when thankfully the new format ended it.
