Hello All,

While many of us have been enjoying the Winter Olympics and the gold medal
performances of outstanding athletes, Master ULR Transoceanic DXer Tony King of
Greytown, New Zealand has been using his Tecsun PL-380 Ultralight radio and box
loop to make X-band receptions worthy of the highest spot on the DXing Awards
Podium.

In addition to receptions of 1690-WPTX (Lexington Park, MD) and 1620-WDHP (St.
Croix, Virgin Islands), both 10 kW/ 1 kW, Tony has reported reception of
1690-CJLO in Montreal, Quebec, a 1 kW station. This reception (at 14,580 km/
9,059 miles) breaks the all-time Ultralight radio DX Distance record set by
Gary Deacon at Fish Hoek, South Africa for his reception of 1053-JOAR in
Nagoya, Japan on April 2, 2009 (14,462 km/ 8,896 miles, with his Sony SRF-M37V
and beverage). The fact that the Worldwide ULR Distance Record is now held for
reception of a 1 kW station is pretty mind-boggling... are there any DXers in
Montreal that would like to try for reception of a 1 kW station in New Zealand?
:-)

Of course, Tony's reception of 1690-CJLO also breaks the ULR 1 kW Distance
Record, set again by Gary Deacon for his reception of 1017-Vision Radio in
Bunbury, West Australia (8,593 km/ 5,566 miles) on April 15, 2009 at Fish Hoek,
South Africa. Despite earlier reports on the Ultralight list, however, Tony's
reception of 1690-WPTX in Lexington Park, MD did not break the ULR 10 kW
Distance Record in the Unlimited Class, which is still held by Gary Deacon for
his reception of 801-KTWG in Agana, Guam (14,157 km/ 8,797 miles) at Fish Hoek,
South Africa on April 28, 2009. Sorry for this oversight, which was caught by
our Ultralight Radio DX Records Administrator, Allen Willie of Newfoundland.

If you have been looking for a new hobby challenge, why not give Ultralight
Radio Transoceanic DXing a try? We are having more fun and excitement than we
have experienced for decades!

73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)
