<<< Good luck to Gary DeBock at this same Rockworks 4 cliff in a couple of days! I know he's always had excellent DX results at Rockworks, and I hope his string of success continues. We left lots of of DX behind for you to pick from, Gary :^) >>>
Hi Guy, I'm very sorry that you and Chuck didn't enjoy better results at Rockwork this week. I've never DXed here in April, so I really don't know what to expect as far as TP's and DU's. I do know that the New Zealand stations really boom in on any July or August day, though. Here in Cannon Beach it's raining the night before my first cliff visit, and Murphy's Law has already struck once (my Edirol R09 recorder was left in Puyallup by mistake, so I won't be able to post same-day MP3's). The FSL antennas and radios are all here, though, and ready for some nasty weather. By tomorrow morning it should be clear how well they will do against Mr. Murphy in tracking down the TP's and DU's on the Cliff (after all, it can't be any worse than it is in Puyallup, right? :-) 73, Gary DeBock (in rainy Cannon Beach, OR) -----Original Message----- From: Guy Atkins <d...@guyatkins.com> To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America <irca@hard-core-dx.com> Sent: Tue, Apr 8, 2014 10:44 am Subject: [IRCA] Rockworks 4 DXpedition - April 8th Our hopes for this 3rd morning on the Rockworks 4 cliff bouncing back with lots of DX were not fulfilled. The signals simply weren't there beyond a smattering of TPs/DUs, neither on Chuck's Flag antenna nor my ALA100M loop. By the way, Chuck's Flag loop size is larger than I reported earlier; it is closer to 18 ft. X 15 ft, suspended by fiberglass masts held vertical in concrete bases. My ALA100M loop is working well, with very low background noise levels using the measurement method I described yesterday. The noise floor on 1720 kHz was -119 dBm with the standard DC interface box, and -110 dBm with the ALA1530S+ DC interface. These are even better figures than yesterday's numbers, and indeed the band seemed quieter. Sensitivity was excellent on all domestic channels with this loop, but unfortunately propagation wasn't cooperating for DUs or TPs. Chuck's larger antenna was no better... a few "big guns" and that was it. Here's my brief loggings from this morning: April 8th --------------------------------------- 594 JAPAN JOAK NHK1, Tokyo, Apr 08 1312 - Female talking in Japanese; fair level. (Atkins-OR) 891 UNIDENTIFIED, Apr 08 1320 - Threshold level audio of female high-pitched a capella vocals; sounded SE Asian. Thailand is listed for this frequency. (Atkins-OR) 909 JAPAN JOCB NHK2, Nagoya, Aichi, Apr 08 1308 - Poor signal of Japanese singing. Presumed. (Atkins-OR) 1008 NEW ZEALAND Newstalk ZB, Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, Apr 08 1305 - talk in English by male announcers, Poor-fair, and never reached the signal level heard on the 7th. (Atkins-OR) 1035 NEW ZEALAND Newstalk ZB, Wellington, Apr 08 1310 - Noted again this morning with fair signal of talk in English; parallel to 1008. (Atkins-OR) 1206 CHINA Yanbian RGD, Yanji, Jilin, Apr 08 1326 - Talk in Korean by man & woman; Yanbian is listed as 24h Korean lang. Poor-fair. (Atkins-OR) 1503 TAIWAN CBS-RTI-VoTaiwan-Family R, Fangliao, Apr 08 1314 - Tentative, with Chinese talk mixing with Japanese talk from JOUK Akita. Poor. (Atkins-OR) 1566 SOUTH KOREA HLAZ FEBC, Jeju, Jeju-do, Apr 08 1329 - Japanese talk with mention of "FEBC". Fair.
