*“Revitalizing the AM band by allowing licensees a low powered FM translator frequency is not “revitalization.” It’s a white flag surrender, with the FCC and broadcast industry giving up on the AM radio. And could that be the ultimate goal? Freeing up the valuable AM (broadcast) spectrum space to be auctioned off for other uses, like wireless data?” he writes..."*
As horrible as that sounds - it is not likely the AM dial would be useful for data transmission at all well... Because the very same thing that effects us radio listeners would impinge on the performance of the AM dial as a data carrier -- an endless orchestra of RFI from cheap wall warts, switching power supplies and poorly maintained power lines would render the AM spectrum as useless for wireless data as it is for the current crop of stalwarts still clinging to the notion of medium wave as an entertainment or experimental hobbyist medium. The fact that the FCC is actually taking the occasional glance (at the AM dial)- and recognizing its sad state of affairs... brings me no end of joy. http://wvxu.org/post/unhappy-birthday-wlw-am > > -- Colin Newell - Editor and creator *of *Coffeecrew.com <http://www.Coffeecrew.com> and DXer.ca <http://www.DXer.ca> - VA7WWV | Twitter @CoffeeCrew | Victoria - Canada _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
