No doubt a lot of the noise was directly radiating into your wire.  In that 
case, a choke is just a paperweight.

Hi Colin,

Yes, I thought of a CM choke as well, and tried one (with plenty of
inductance to work well down at LF)--no discernible change in the AC
hum! But the longwire is all down, supports removed, wire rolled up, so
I don't ever plan to try that failed experiment again.   :)
