It goes from U (Unrated) to E,D,C,B,and A. We have a variety of "rated" tournaments..."E and Under", "C and Under", etc. So, it's a source of great fun for the fencer, and great pride for "fencing parents" who lurk in the shadows cheering their kids on, when a beginning fencer gets their first rating.
