I'm not sure the problem is necessarily with girls entering competitions as 
much as it is with the drop out rate of girls.
It looks to me like lots of girls join the sport, (beginners classes are 
usually about 50/50 male/female), but then slowly drop off the scene so that 
about a year later you're down to a mere fraction of the number you started 
with.
I think perhaps the reason is that it IS a male dominated sport. When girls 
come down to training they seldom get to fence other girls, partly because of 
the small numbers but also because they have to fight with the lads 
(metaphorically) for space on the pistes. 

If I was running my own club (oh to dream..), I would strongly consider a 
"girls only" session once a week. That way you would gain much more experience 
of fencing people your own sex (as you would in competition). Also it might 
bring a more social aspect to the sessions, which might keep the ladies coming 
back for more.
What would you think of that?
