A 3-year PhD position is available at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), Bergen, Norway. The successful candidate will work in relation to the research projects PAACSIZ, POCAHONTAS and NORCLIM. The projects aim to understand and to quantify the main components of the heat budget over the Nordic Seas, a key region for the temperate climate of north-western Europe. The working place will be NERSC, with extended stays at the Svalbard Science Centre (Svalbard/Spitsbergen, Norway) and at the International Arctic Research Centre (Fairbanks, Alaska).
NERSC is an independent, non-profit research institute affiliated with the University of Bergen, Norway. At NERSC, 64 researchers and students of 14 nations conduct environmental research funded by national and international governmental agencies, research councils and industry. Information about NERSC can be obtained from http://www.nersc.no The Nordic Seas are rich in natural offshore resources (fisheries and petroleum resources) and might play an important role for a new Northern Sea Route from Europe to Asia. All depend critically on the extent and variability in the sea ice cover, which is strongly linked with the region's weather and climate. The area around Svalbard/Spitsbergen (78?N) is one of the most accessible in the Arctic, and it has therefore a unique observational coverage. It allows a detailed study of the observed extreme climate variability in this area. The PhD project will retrieve and analyse the available observational data from regular, in situ and irregular field campaign measurements with special emphasis on the lower atmosphere--upper ocean data and their correlation to the large scale circulation of the ocean--atmosphere system. The analysis aims to quantify the vertical heat budget in the region and serve for better understanding of causes and patterns of the observed changes. Eligible candidate must hold a MSc degree, or equivalent, in meteorology, oceanography, mathematics, physics or related fields meeting admission requirement to pursue the PhD programme at the University of Bergen. Strong skills in atmospheric/ocean dynamics, knowledge of statistical analysis and experience with the observational data processing are advantageous, as well as familiarity with high-latitude data analysis and boundary layer turbulence and modelling.
